Associate Pastor Nominating Committee Updates

July 25, 2016

Dear Friends,

Happy summer! The Associate Pastor Nominating Committee (APNC) thanks each of you who participated in our congregational survey. Click here to read the Executive Summary, which we are glad to be able share with you. Print copies are available Reception. Also, the survey raw data is available here. While many provided thoughtful and candid narrative comments, these are not publicly available to honor our commitment to keep individual comments confidential. Over the coming weeks the APNC will be prayerfully reflecting on the valuable comments and suggestions we received.

The APNC process is being re-evaluated in light of Ian's resignation. Please share your questions or concerns with us, by emailing apnc@fpcberkeley.org.

Thanks and peace to you,

The APNC thanks each of the 340 people who completed our survey which closed on May 10. We are in the process of reviewing great responses and comments, and hope to post survey results on the First Pres website early this summer (with paper copies available upon request). Once again, our deepest thanks to all who participated, asked questions about, thoughtfully considered and completed, and sent separate missives on the survey! For more information, email apnc@fpcberkeley.org.

April 17, 2016

The APNC invites you to take a survey to give your input regarding the next Associate Pastor (AP) for Missional Engagement and the work of mission outreach. The AP for Missional Engagement will oversee all mission programs at First Pres, including all mission partnerships and University Ministries. She or he will also assume general duties of pastoral card, spiritual leadership, and biblical teaching. Therefore, we are interested in learning about your vision for First Pres’ mission outreach and university engagement.

Please note this survey is only intended to advise the APNC in its search for an Associate Pastor. Session is working on a separate way to gather First Pres feedback as a follow-up to the 2016 Annual Meeting. As a courtesy to the volunteers serving on the APNC, please limit your comments to those that directly relate to the search for an AP for Missional Engagement.

Click here to take the APNC SURVEY by Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at 5:00 pm. Paper copies of the survey will be available at our Pathway Table on April 17 and April 24, as well as at Reception.

We estimate the survey will take approximately 15–20 minutes to complete. All responses are confidential. Aggregated responses may be published, but individual narrative responses and identifying data will not be published. Please email APNC@fpcberkeley.org if you have additional comments or questions.

Thank you in advance for your prayerful and considered responses to our survey.

February 10, 2016

The APNC is excited that the Mission Study Update is completed and was approved by the San Francisco Presbytery on February 9, 2016. Click here to download a copy of the approved update, and click here to read the 2010 Mission Study.

We have used this time as a "listen-while-we-wait" phase. Our focus these last few months has been to talk to staff(and former staff), Mission Partners, and church members with past and present involvement with First Pres missions. It has been enlightening and encouraging to hear about our missions history, current activities and visions for the future. This background is giving us a valuable context and foundation to move forward with the specific tasks outlined for us in the next phase (see the Steps to Calling an Associate Pastor).

January 21, 2016

Dear Friends,

We are happy to announce that the First Pres Mission Study Update, approved by Session on January 11, was approved by the Committee on Ministry (COM) of SF Presbytery at their January 14, 2016 meeting. This action puts our Mission Study Update on the docket for the February 9 SF Presbytery meeting, during which it will be voted on.

First Pres received approval by the SF Presbytery to do an update—rather than a new Mission Study. Thus, our Mission Study Update Team wrote an update that includes an Introduction followed by the update focused on six key areas:

  • Our Call
  • Organization and Leadership
  • Missional Engagement
  • Our Congregation
  • First Pres Finances
  • Gender, Sexuality, Marriage, and Leadership

Although it is not fully approved by the Presbytery, click here to download a copy of the update report, and click here to read the 2010 Mission Study. Once approved by the SF Presbytery, the APNC can complete forms for approval by Session and COM to post our Associate Pastor position (see the Steps to Calling an Associate Pastor).

October 16, 2015

Dear Friends,

The Associate Pastor Nominating Committee (APNC) has been meeting almost weekly since August 23, 2015. We have happily begun the process of getting to know one another and the search process requirements. In sharing our faith journeys, we’ve been blessed to see how God has been working in each of our lives to bring us to this committee. We have read a 48-page booklet, On Calling a Pastor, that details our denomination’s steps for calling a new pastor. We will update you as we reach key milestones, and provide more information as we can.

We have defined steps in our process, and are currently at the first steps: Organize and Explore. We are waiting for an update to the 2010 Mission Study, which we hope to have by the end of the year.

Please join us in praying that we will be led by the Holy Spirit to the candidate best suited to lead First Pres for Missional Engagement, so we can continue to carry out the Great Commission to the world.

For more information, please email APNC@fpcberkeley.org.
