Frequently Asked Questions
Is the counseling service a new ministry of First Pres?
No, the counseling service has been active at First Pres since 1977. The name has been changed to more accurately reflect the professional level of the counselors.
Who are the counselors?
Our counselors are Christian graduate and post-graduate level students working on completing the hours needed to become licensed professional therapists and paraprofessionals. To read more about our staff, visit our website, www.berkeleychristiancounselors.org.
Do I need to be a member or friend of First Pres to receive counseling?
No, about half of our clients come from the local community and are not part of First Pres. Many of our clients come from diverse faith backgrounds as well. We actively encourage those from outside our community to use our services and hope you will refer family and friends to Berkeley Christian Counselors, too.
What is the cost for counseling and is there a limit to the number of sessions?
We have a sliding scale based on ability to pay, at $35-55 per session for individuals and $55-75 per session for couples. Counseling is no longer limited to short-term counseling of twelve sessions.
What if I can not afford that amount?
There is scholarship help available for those who are in need.
What kinds of concerns do people discuss with a counselor?
Counselors meet with individuals, couples, and families about conflict, relationships, spiritual confusion, anxiety and stress, depression, pre-marriage preparation, marriage issues, parenting issues, grief and loss, self-esteem, and life transition issues.
