Sustainability Mission Statement

The First Pres Sustainability Committee was formed in 2007. Through the creation of this committee, First Pres is striving to embrace the comprehensive call to service and to address the issues which our suffering planet faces. By providing information and resources regarding the process of becoming more sustainable while striving to align our own practices, our hope is that we as a community may take part in the cultivation and stewardship of the Earth as God desires.

This sustainability initiative will focus on the following areas:

On our campus

• Work to further reduce waste
• Purchase sustainable products where possible
• Provide avenues for individuals to give feedback and suggestions
• Consider certification as an Alameda County Green Business

In our congregation

• Provide education about resource consumption and greenhouse gas emissions
• Encourage carpooling and lower carbon footprint transportation options
• Develop ways to reduce solid waste generated by Sunday meals
• Use creativity and celebration to encourage change

In our community

• Support Berkeley's sustainability and greenhouse gas emission goals
• Partner with members of the larger community to meet our campus and congregational goals
