First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley, CA

Departments of Session

In order to better serve the needs of the First Pres community, the Session is organized into departments. There are two types of departments, those devoted to a specific ministry area, and the others focusing on a specific administrative work of the church. Each department can be contacted through its chairperson; please see the Session Roster for a complete list of Session department assignments.

Children's and Youth Ministries
Through nurturing relationships and engaging Bible-centered curriculum, we seek to reach the hearts of children with the love and saving grace of Jesus Christ. Children's and Youth Ministries is privileged to partner with families in helping children begin or continue their journey of faith.

College and University Ministries
First Pres has been committed to ministry to university and college students for over 125 years. Students in our programs attend Cal as well as many other local schools; we minister also to students from schools across the country who return to First Pres as their church home during the summer. The work of the Elders falls into three categories: prayer, staff support, and vision development.

Caring Ministries
We seek to be a caring community that expresses God's sacrificial and healing love by serving one another and our world in tangible and generous ways. The Congregational Care Department oversees a wide variety of caring ministries, including educational programs, caring services, recovery groups, support groups, hospitality and food service, healing services, and prayer ministry.

Mission Outreach and Evangelism
At the heart of First Pres's outreach ministries lies a dual concern for the justice and compassion of God, echoing the call of the prophet Micah to "do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God." Each opportunity for service and transformation offers our congregation avenues for witness in our church, community, and the world.

Worship and Fine Arts
Worship is the essence of our life in Christ. We seek to grow in gratitude, delight, and heartfelt offering of our lives in response to the goodness and grace of God. The Worship and Fine Arts Department is in a process of discerning its areas of responsibility; the department is presently involved in the development of visual arts and in the oversight of communion.
Chair: Mary Ann Wight (mawight@mills.edu)

Buildings & Grounds
The Buildings & Grounds Department supports the church staff in oversight and maintenance of the First Pres facilities. Our budget provides financial support for facility repair projects and equipment needs. We work closely with the Facilities Manager to create a welcoming and effective environment for the ministries of the church.
Chair: Meadow Anderson ()

Facilities Task Force
The Facilities Task Force is a special committee of Session formed to plan and manage the process of renovation and construction of facilities, including the Capital Campaigns. The present plan is to complete the playgrounds during 2007. Upgrade work to the Sanctuary and Westminster Hall will be accomplished as funds become available.
Chair: Jim Childers (non-Session)

Nominating Committee
The Nominating Committee seeks out and nominates qualified candidates for Elders, Deacons, Pastor Nominating Committee members, and Presbytery delegates. Though we nominate candidates, it is the role of the congregation to elect new Elders, Deacons, and Presbytery delegates.
Chair: Joyce French ()

Personnel
The Personnel Department provides support and counsel to the Senior Pastor and the Director of Administration regarding personnel issues. The department is involved in decisions regarding staffing, the personnel budget, benefits, performance issues, and position descriptions.
Chair: Rod Hughes (rhcpaoak@aol.com)

Stewardship
The Stewardship Department is responsible for the overall financial picture of the church. This includes review of the financials, the update of the Integrated Financial Plan, stewardship communication, and fundraising guidelines. The budget committee, comprised of all department chairs, works with staff and our department to develop the annual budget.
