2:42 House Vocational Experience
Offering radical hospitality and intentional community for college students in the East Bay.
The 2:42 Housing Vocational Experience is funded by a grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc.
In September 2014, First Pres received a three-year $97,000 grant for The 2:42 Housing Vocational Experience: A Theological Exploration of Vocation for Campus Ministry.
The 2:42 House Vocational Experience (HVE) is headquartered in the 2:42 House (based on Acts 2:42, “they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer…”), located on church property and in the heart of the Berkeley community. The primary purposes of the HVE are to:
Our goal is that students will finish their education at UC Berkeley equipped beyond their respective majors, with a redefined and reinvigorated view of vocation that affects how they see their Creator, themselves, and the world, as well as demonstrated skills and experience to help them live into that vision. In addition, we hope students will come away with a stronger sense of the importance of inter-generational community. Most importantly, we want each student who completes the HVE to be able to better discern God’s unique call in their lives, in ways that will move them beyond merely “getting a job” to discovering rich resources for lifelong Christian stewardship and vocation.
How is the 2:42 House program doing?
Read our annual program and financial reports and learn more about this ministry to encourage students to deepen their Christian faith, better understand a uniquely Christian vision of “vocation,” and integrate the two into a holistic life
In October 2017, First Pres was awarded a five-year $50,000 Lilly Sustainability Grant for 2017-2023! This grant allows us to continue the 2:42 House Vocational Experience, and as this grant’s purpose is to fund no more than 50% of the project, we are working to establish sustainable ongoing funding for the future.
