Life-altering events happen.
When they do, we’re here to listen and offer support. Our pastors, Caring Ministries staff, trained community members, and licensed clinicians from Berkeley Christian Counselors are available to provide resources to meet you where you are and accompany you on your journey. We would love to help—just let us know how.
Companionship and Guidance
If you are facing a crisis, grieving a loss, experiencing a life transition, or facing a spiritual challenge of any kind, our Stephen Ministers are here to help. Our Stephen Ministers are trained community members who provide confidential, no-fee, ongoing, one-to-one support to those experiencing a challenging time in life.
To learn more, or to request the help of a Stephen Minister, contact David Wagner at [email protected] or (510) 848-6252 ext. 241.
Financial Assistance
Through the Deacon Fund, First Pres provides emergency, one-time financial assistance to members of our community who are in need. Send a confidential request to [email protected], or call (510) 848 6252 ext. 514.
Prayer
If you would like us to pray for you, or for a family member or friend, we invite you to submit a request. Your need will be held in confidence and can be submitted anonymously, if you prefer. You can also reach out to us directly via email at [email protected].
Support Groups and Classes
First Pres and our partners at Berkeley Christian Counselors offer a range of support groups and classes throughout the year.
Christian Parents of LGBTQI+ Kids Group
If you’re a parent or grandparent on this journey, this special group is here to walk alongside you. We come from near and far, represent varied faith expressions, and share “I get it” belonging in community. We meet monthly by Zoom (for now) and our group represents “kids” of all ages who reflect a variety of experiences. For more information, contact David Wagner, [email protected] or 510-280-6141.
Divorce Recovery Ministry (DRM)
Having received the non-judgmental love and comfort of God in the midst of our brokenness, Divorce Recovery Ministry provides a safe place for the Holy Spirit to bring healing to all who are working through the end of a long-term relationship.

Widow/Widowers Grief Recovery Groups
Our Grief Recovery groups are open to widows and widowers of all ages. Whether you have lost a spouse recently or years ago, all who are interested in working through their grief are welcome. Our community:
- provides a safe place for sharing experiences of loss and grief
- facilitates understanding of the grieving process
- encourages hope and provides support
- enables people to begin and work through the grief process
For more information about available groups, download our brochure or contact Merrilee Mitchell at [email protected].
Home and Hospital Visits
If you are sick or homebound, our Deacons are available to come speak with you, pray with you, offer communion, and listen to your concerns. Deacons are ordained servant-leaders of the church. They serve as the hands and feet of our Caring Ministries, offering a good word and the comfort of Christ whenever needed. To seek the help of a Deacon, contact David Wagner at [email protected] or (510) 848-6252 ext. 241.
Parish Ministry
The Parish Ministry at First Pres seeks to foster community-based care and connections within our congregation. The First Pres community extends throughout much of the Bay Area. Parishes are smaller communities defined according to zip code. Each of our 14 Parishes is led by a team of Deacons and other lay leaders. Through their various gatherings and service opportunities, individuals within each Parish can become better acquainted and strengthen their connection with each other.
Parish Ministries also provides community members prayer and support for tangible needs. Working in partnership with the pastoral care team, help and assistance is available during times of need and loss. For more information about Parish Ministry and to find out which Parish you are in, contact [email protected].
