As Ecclesiastes reminds us, life can be unpredictable and difficult. At one point or another, we all need extra support. One way First Pres supports those in need is through our Deacon Fund. This fund offers confidential care for members, friends, and our local neighbors in times of crisis and great need.
In past years and throughout the pandemic, the generous giving received for the fund covered more than what was being used. The situation has drastically shifted as now we have almost triple the cost of care needs than the amount of funds coming in. Needs such as:
- One-time, emergency financial assistance covering housing, medical, and dental expenses. In 2022, over 15 families had emergency housing paid for to bridge the gap until permanent housing was found.
- Counseling Scholarships for those unable to fully pay for services at Berkeley Christian Counselors. This year over 50 clients have been supported.
- Bereavement ministry which includes memorial service and reception expenses. This is one way we care for our beloved congregants who have passed away and their families.
- Special projects that extend compassion to our First Pres family like groceries and medicine delivered to sheltering in place congregants.
