March 2 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a time where we journey towards the Cross. It is a time we are drawn into remembering the bookends of Jesus’ ministry on earth: beginning with his 40 days of temptation in the wilderness and ending with his death on the cross.
We invite you to solemnly reflect on Jesus’ life, paying particular attention to his humanity, his mortality, and his life dedicated to service of others. This year’s Ash Wednesday service is designed to reflect the knowledge of the mortality of each person and the hopeful sacrifice of living a life of service to others, despite our frailty.
Registration is requested for planning purposes, but walk-in attendees are welcome. For the evening service, an optional light meal will be offered first come first served.
This Ash Wednesday service offers two separate experiences:
1. From 11:00 am – 12:30 pm, enter the service on the Patio in front of the Sanctuary.
For the first part of our 90-minute experience, we will be making sack lunches for a group of men in need at City Team. While you work there will be discussion questions at each table to keep the conversation flowing. About an hour into the experience, a few will go to deliver the meals, while the rest of us stay to clean up. Throughout this experience there will be music playing and a station to receive ashes.
2. From 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm we invite you into a time of solemn reflection that centers around a silent shared meal. Sign up for either a 5:00 pm or 5:45 pm seating, and the experience should run about 30 minutes.
Enter into the sanctuary to begin, and sit in contemplation. After a few minutes of gathering music, you will then be invited out to the Patio, where we will serve soup and bread. During this time of quiet contemplation, we will eat together but without conversation. There will be readings designed to deepen your silent reflection. Whenever you feel ready, you may enter back into the sanctuary to receive ashes, pray, and stay to enjoy the music. You are also welcome to remain in the sanctuary for the entire service, if you prefer.
