Everyday, Project Mercy works to renew the heart of a nation and change lives. Their goal is to root out systemic poverty within Ethiopia, by providing healthcare, education, food security, adults skills and infrastructure. Operating mainly in two locations, ChaCha and Yetobon, Project Mercy aims to transform communities, so that they are self-sustaining, easily accessible to the surrounding area, and able to generate income with transferable and long-lasting skills.
First Pres has been supporting Project Mercy for over ten years through BAMM (Bay Area Medical Missions) by sending doctors and nurses to provide medical services, providing financial support for the community health programs, and recent funding of the school nurse-Betty. Recently, Megan Palsa, RN and Mike VanNoord, MD worked along-side the Ethiopian medical team, operating on patients and completing health screening and treatment for 1,500 school children. A community health education program was launched and will continue to reach villagers, educating them about preventative disease measures for prenatal care, including the use of proper hygiene.
